Chapter 13
I left Bridget in search of Declan. On this side, he needed all the help we could give him.
I found him wandering around outside the courthouse. He didn't seem all that lucid.
Senan was walking beside him, using his magic to appear human. When I queried Senan with a look, he merely shrugged.
Stepping in front of Declan to stop his progress, he looked at me confused before walking around me. It didn't appear that the tea had the effect he had hoped it would.
I looked at Senan for help, and he waved his hand in a wave of magic at Declan that stopped his progress but did nothing for his state of mind.
Great.
I nodded my head in the direction of the courthouse and Senan caught my drift. If we could get him in the door and into a seat that might be enough.
With another wave, Senan steered sleepwalking Declan in the right direction. In all sincerity, I had doubted this plan would bear any fruit, but there was the chance Lughâs magic may be more potent than Iâd like to admit.
Declan seated, I dismissed Senan to look after his family. I took the seat next to Declan and performed an animation spell around us. This way, we could sit silent and motionless like Declan was, and I preferred to, without seeming odd.
Though it was a dreamscape, it was advanced because people did interact with us. And we could influence them.
For that, I would need to pay attention to what was going on so we could appear to react appropriately. Which wasn't difficult because I did need to be alert for the queen.
I didn't get the sense that she was aware of either of us here but just in case. When she was aware of us she wasn't going to be pleased.
The entire town was in attendance. Bridget's hell was a matter of public gossip and judgment.
Chaos was the reigning feeling in the room. People sat, stood, fidgeted, whispered, and shouted at random intervals while more streamed in.
There was no order yet, no judge to enforce it. The public outcry over witchcraft was a heady mix of fear, loathing, and a little reverence borne out of self-preservation.
No single person wanted to face the witch, but together, they felt strong in their numbers. The afflicted Mary was subject to fits of twitching and random outbursts.
That was what brought Bridget to court and would bring many other men and women to trial for witchcraft during this time.
The Salem Witch Trials would prove to be a monumental period for various reasons. There was no innocent until proven guilty yet, and the accused were denied lawyers.
It was the guilty proven guilty, except they're not. Innocent lives were put to the stake for absurd reasons.
It's jealous wives who point their fingers at the maid, maybe because she doesn't like how her husband looks at her. And neighbors call out neighbors because they don't like the way they dress, or talk, or maintain their property.
Where the real guilty ones just manage to point the finger first.
